What is World Book Day?

Thursday 6th March 2008 was this year's World Book Day - the main aim of which - as the National Literacy Trust reminds us - is "to encourage people to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own". You can find out more by visiting www.worldbookday.com or just by googling World Book Day!

At BookRelief UK we are actively promoting book ownership - especially among children - by working with a number of local primary schools in North Devon to co-ordinate and fund a "Reading is Fundamental" (RIF) programme for their Year 6 pupils. You can find out more about RIF programmes at www.rif.org.uk .

To fund this programme and to help with some of our other work, which includes collecting, sorting and sending suitable educational books to specific school projects/libraries in Uganda and Ethiopia, we celebrated World Book Day with the following activities/events.

World Book Day Draw

The draw was made at the Durrant House Hotel, Northam, Bideford, on the evening of Thursday 6th March and the prize winners are:

Three prizes each of £50 worth of National Book Tokens or Cash Equivalent -

Jane Chappell of Barnstaple with ticket number 02207
Lindsay of Barnstaple with ticket number 03285
Irfan Master of London with ticket number 02155

Five prizes each of £20 worth of National Book Tokens or Cash Equivalent -

C Brown of Northam, Bideford with ticket number 03098
Joanne Eaton of Bideford with ticket number 00363
R Gross of Barnstaple with ticket number 01519
Peter Ashton of Bideford with ticket number 03351
O Whitefield of Northam, Bideford with ticket number 02280

We would take this opportunity to thank all of those who bought tickets for the draw - and for those who attended our very successful quiz night at the Durrant which attracted 12 competing teams. From the feedback we have received, a fun time was been had by all. And congratulations to the winning team "Herman's Hermits". We will have a final figure for the monies raised within the next few days but we appear to have netted between £350/400 for BookRelief UK after expenses.

We would also like to thank very much indeed the management of the Durrant House Hotel for providing a lovely venue, and those who sponsored our prizes for both the draw and the quiz night - viz:

The Lions Club of Bideford
Walter Henry's Bookshop, Bideford
Sol Books of Barnstaple
Geoffrey Cox QC, MP
David Chaffe, naturalist and author

And last but not least our Quizmaster, Jim Jackson of Appledore and others who worked very hard to make the event such a success - and our treasurer John Carvosso who sold a record number of draw tickets and russled up two teams for the quiz!
