About Us

The concept of BookRelief UK is modelled in part on the success of an American based online bookselling organisation Better World Books (www.betterworldbooks.com) and the partnerships it has developed with both US domestic charities such as the National Center for Family Literacy (www.famlit.org), Prison Books Programme (www.prisonbookprogramme.org) and organisations focused on such work in developing countries such as Books for Africa (www.booksforafrica.org), Room to Read (www.roomtoread.org) and the World Education & Development Fund (www.worldfund.org).

The 'raw materials' that propel BookRelief UK forward are the immense amount of used books currently available for donation (or otherwise available very cheaply) within the UK, which can then be sold by us to provide funds to support literacy projects.

We are presently selling a selection of books online through Abebooks, and expect to expand this activity over the next few months and to also list stock with Amazon Marketpace, Biblio, and eBay.

We are still a small operation, but in our first year we have funded two 'Reading is Fundamental' projects at schools in the Bideford area (see www.rif.org.uk to see how these work), and have begun to sort and ship books for two projects in Sub-Sahara Africa. Please see our 'Projects' section for more details.
